While the others were in the dining room, creating a plan of attack, Jewel went to check out the kitchen. Caleb had most of the stuff she needed, but not everything. A run to the closest market was needed so she told the others sheâd be back in a few, and dashed out before anyone could say another word.
So much had happened in the last few days that she just really needed a few quiet moments. Her emotions were all tangled, just simmering below the surface and if she wasnât careful, she was going to lose it.
Jewel parked her truck in front of the market, but didnât get out. Sitting there with her eyes closed she tried to centre herself. There was a ritual to do, and she needed to get a grip or it wouldnât work.
Deep breathes in, blow them out slowly ⦠search for the calm within. Only she didnât find calm. She found anger, and fear, and ⦠desire.
The simmering anger at Leon and the clan for leaving her behind was underscored by an understanding that it was Leonâs responsibility to do what was best for the whole clan. Intellectually she knew this, but that didnât stop her from feeling betrayed by those that were supposed to be her community, her 'family'. No, being in Pearson right now was not safe for them, but then again, with Nadya taken, they were safe. Nadya was always the one who attracted supernatural trouble.
But she was also usually the one who got them out of it.
Now it was up to Jewel, and she couldnât do it alone. She hated to depend on anyone else, especially a man. She had her Motherâs bad taste in men, which is why sheâd always gone for the quick fling, and never let her emotions get involved. Only now she could already feel her heart opening up to the warrior.
And Devil was a warrior, no matter that his sister called him Angel. Jewel knew the look of a man whoâd killed before, and was willing to do it again. Yet, she also sensed gentleness in him. It was there in the way he looked at his sister, and even in the way heâd kissed her temple when they were outside earlier. The man was dangerous in more ways than one.
It was good thing she knew how to protect herself â in more ways than one.
She sucked in a deep breath and let it out slowly, then climbed out of the truck. It was time to get to work.
Finding what she needed at the market was quick and easy, so she didn't waste any more time, and was soon back at the house. As soon as she stepped inside Jewel knew sheâd been the topic of discussion while she was gone. She focused on reciting her grocery list as she met each personâs gaze, she didnât want Devil getting into her head when she wasnât prepared. She's blocked him hard the night before, but that didn't mean he wasn't prepared to try again.
